History

The construction of Fyfe Apartments, originally the Richard H. Fyfe Building began in 1916 and was completed in 1919. The Richard H. Fyfe Building served as the central headquarters and retail storefront for the Fyfe Shoe Company. The Fyfe Shoe Company was founded in 1865 moving the retail store along Woodward Avenue several locations prior construction of the Fyfe Building. Architectural firm Smith Hinchman & Grylls were employed in the design of the building which was often referred to as “the world’s largest shoe store”. Standing at 180 feet encompassing 14 stories and 2 basements the building became a shining example of neo-gothic architectural style. It was one of Detroit’s first skyscrapers and a beacon of Detroit’s industrial might during the early 20th century.

“Vertical lines sweep from sidewalk to sky, as a highly sculptural facade creates a rich interplay of light, shade and shadow.”
